1969년 서울에서 태어나 경원대학교 미술대학 회화과와 같은 대학원 회화과를 졸업했다. 노동자로 살아 온 가족에 관한 이야기를 시작으로 점점 더 소외되어가는 노동자 계층과 지역, 이주, 여성, 공동체 문제에 관심을 가지고 현대 예술로서의 다큐멘터리 영화와 공공미술, 개별작업과 공동작업, 전시장과 극장 그리고 생활현장을 오가며 다양한 형태의 작업을 만들어 오고 있다.

2001년 첫 개인전 <답십리 우성연립 지하 102호>를 대안공간 풀에서 개최했으며 광주비엔날레(2002, 2004, 2010), 부산비엔날레(2004) 등 국내외 단체 전시에 참여했다. 동시에 성남프로젝트(1998-1999), 현저동프로젝트(1999), 믹스라이스(2002-2004), 보통미술잇다(2007-2011) 등의 미술가 그룹 활동과 공공예술 프로젝트를 통해 여러 분야와 장르를 작업에 끌어들여 주민 스스로 이야기 할 수 있는 방법들을 모색해 왔고, 그 중 외국인 이주노동자, 임대아파트 주민들과 함께 만든 영상/ 영화작업들이 서울독립영화제(2003 믹스라이스 특별전, 기획/제작 믹스라이스, 연출: 타킨아웅칸 외 7인), 부산국제영화제(2010 오디션, 기획/제작 보통미술잇다, 연출: 김민경)에 초청되었다.
2010년 부터 2014년 까지 금천구에 위치한 금천예술공장 입주작가로 머무르고 오가며 지역주부들(금천미세스)과 함께 미술, 영화, 투어, 퍼포먼스, 리서치 등 커뮤니티아트 프로그램을 진행해 왔다. 금천미세스는 2013, 2014년 연속 금천예술공장 입주작가로 선정되었고 현재까지 활동을 이어가고 있다.


2009년 첫 촬영 된 <비념>(2012)을 시작으로 <위로공단>(2014/2015), <려행>(2016) 총 세 편의 장편 다큐멘터리를 연출했다. '제주 4·3'을 다룬 첫 장편 다큐멘터리 <비념>(2012 기획/제작 김민경, 연출 임흥순)은 2012년 전주국제영화제, DMZ국제다큐멘터리영화제 등'장편경쟁부문에 초청되었고, 2013년 4월3일 전국 22개관에서 개봉했다. 여성노동을 주제로 만든 <위로공단>(2014/2015 기획/제작 김민경,임흥순 연출 임흥순)은 2014년 부산국제영화제를 시작으로 국내외 다양한 영화제에 상영되었으며, 제56회 베니스비엔날레 (2015, 베니스)에서 은사자상을 수상했다.
최근 샤르자비엔날레(2015, 샤르자), MoMA PS1(2015, 뉴욕), 국립신미술관(2015, 도쿄), 테이트 모던(2015, 런던), 몬트리올국제영화제(2015, 몬트리올), 상하이국제영화제(2015, 상하이), 링컨센터(2016, 뉴욕), 이미지페스트발(2016, 토론토), 퐁피두센터(2016, 파리) 등 전시, 영화제, 스크리닝을 통해 국내외 작품이 소개되었다,

현재 영화제작사 반달BANDAL Doc 공동대표(김민경, 임흥순)로 있으며, 최근 탈북여성들과 함께 만든 <려행 Ryeoheang>에 이어 아시아, 전쟁, 여성을 키워드로 네 번째 장편영화 프로젝트 <환생 Re Born>을 마무리 중이다.
