The Daegu Art Museum is holding SHIN Sangho: Byproduct, its second Umi Hall exhibition for 2012.
Shin began his career as an artist making Korean traditional ceramics and was renowned for it. However, the fame did not stop him there. He kept exploring for changes, and today he has produced a body of work that is uniquely his own, which is at the intersection of drawing, sculpture, and architecture. Not limiting himself to clay but incorporating steel and various materials and installing ceramic pieces and "fired paintings"on exterior walls of buildings, he has expanded his sphere of work to include architecture. Also, he has exposed himself widely to various cultures and countries, from Korea, Europe, and Africa. The result is a unique amalgamation of primitive and modern sensibility as represented by clarity of colors, power of nature, and solid architectural structure, which are the hallmarks of his work. The works in the current exhibition utilize these same characteristics, they are as if the past and future, and the real and the imaginary, are mixed to give a new breed of time and form. The mammoth size and the bright colors of the works, and the convergence of diverse materials in them, also add powerful artistic energy to his work, as mutually different elements crash with and entangled in each other. In the case of works that use discarded military equipment, they portray an image of a war, but war itself is not the theme in these works. From the various weapons of war and military supplies born out of the state-of-the-art industry and technologies, Shin traces our shamanistic instincts and abstract values as represented by 'information', 'industry', and 'science', which are all related to life. Thus, to the artist, the military weapons, supplies, and equipment are the steadfast and state-of-the-art materials that allow him to chart his way to the origins of the deepest human desires, and these objects thus play a crucial role in his work. Furthermore, the use of mass-produced and easily-discarded industrial products in his work is consistent with the Dadaists' use of the ready-made in their art works. Outside of the field of art history, this practice also speaks well to the environmental issue of recycling.
The works are made with military surplus gear, they are a contemporary "byproduct," a result of advanced consumer-society goods meeting an artist. The byproducts are a combination of earth, the origin of life, and the state-of-the-art industrial products now discarded. As such they express the dynamism of our era that is in rapid transformation, as well as the world of imagination, and one can also detect the power nature in these works. ■ HWANG Sungrim
