아트스페이스 J에서는 2018년을 여는 첫 전시로 미국을 대표하는 여류사진가 이모젠 커닝햄(Imogen Cunningham, 1883-1976)의 개인전을 개최한다. 그녀는 도로시아 랭(Dorothea Lange, 1895-1965), 마가렛 버크 화이트(Margaret Bouke White, 1906-1971)와 더불어 세계 3대 여류 사진가로 손꼽히는 인물이다. 열여덟 무렵의 어린 나이에 사진작가가 되기로 결심한 이래, 1976년까지 70여년에 걸쳐 지속된 커닝햄의 삶은 ‘사진의, 사진에 의한, 그리고 사진을 위한 길’이었다고 할 수 있다.

1900년대 초, 유럽 회화주의 전통을 바탕으로 시작된 커닝햄의 사진 작업은 1920년대에 들어 추상성을 강조하는 일련의 식물사진과 인물사진을 통해 리얼리즘을 탐구해 나가게 된다. 화학전공으로 사진 인화에도 정통했던 그녀는 1930년대 동시대를 대표하는 사진작가로 자리매김하며 1932년, 에드워드 웨스턴(Edward Weston, 1886-1958), 안셀 애덤스(Ansel Adams, 1902-1984) 등과 함께 f/64 그룹을 결성하게 된다. 이들은 카메라의 기계적인 재현능력과 사실적인 특성을 수용해 극사실적인 형태의 이미지를 추구하는 형식주의 미학을 통해 당시 미국 사진계에서 가장 진보적인 사진 경향을 보여주었다. 1946년 샌프란시스코로 이주한 커닝햄은 Vanity Fair 의 의뢰로 상업 초상사진과 스트리트 다큐멘터리 작업을 병행하며, 1970년대 중반까지 대상의 순수한 조형미를 구현해낸 실험적인 작업들을 지속해 나갔다.

현재 커닝햄의 작품들은 미국 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA), 구겐하임미술관을 비롯해 세계 각국 유수의 기관들에 소장되어 있으며, 그의 후손들이 운영하는 Imogen Cunningham Trust 재단을 통해 관리되고 있다. 커닝햄은 삶을 마치기 1년 전인 1975년, 사후 작품관리를 위해 Imogen Cunningham Trust 를 설립하였는데, 이는 당시로서는 매우 이례적인 경우로 시대를 앞서간 그녀의 선각자적인 면모를 드러낸다.

이번 전시는 『아트스페이스 J』가 소장하고 있는 커닝햄의 백금프린트 25점과 함께 특별히 『닻미술관』이 소장한 은염프린트 12점으로 구성되어, 국내에서 접하기 쉽지 않은 이모젠 커닝햄의 빈티지 프린트가 지닌 매력을 느껴볼 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다.

뛰어난 재능과 감성을 지닌 예술가로서 이모젠 커닝햄은 70년이라는 긴 시간 동안 자신이 살아가는 시대를 사진 매체를 통해 구현함으로써 대중과 소통해왔다. 동시대인들은 커닝햄 특유의 솔직함과 정직함, 그리고 검소한 삶의 방식을 사랑했다. 1910년대부터 1970년대에 이르는 이모젠 커닝햄의 사진적 자취를 따라감으로써 우리는 사진이 시각적인 예술 매체로서 발전해 나아가는 20세기 사진의 역사와 마주하게 될 것이다.



Art Space J is pleased to announce the first exhibition of 2018, . Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) is regarded as one of the representative female photographers of America along with Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) and Margaret Bouke White (1906-1971). Since making the decision to pursue a career in photography, her life has been a single straight path, driven by photography and for photography over seventy years.

In the beginning of the 1920s, Cunningham explored abstract photography of plants and people against backdrop of European Pictorialism. In 1930s, Cunningham, who was well acquainted with vintage printing (Cunningham majored in chemistry at Univ. of Washington in Seattle), was recognized as one of the representative figures in her field. In 1932, Cunningham was a part of “Group f/64,” formed by avant-garde artists such as Edward Weston (1886-1958), Ansel Adams (1902-1984). The artists in Group f/64 used photography in its purest ways by accepting basic mechanical qualities of camera. Consequently, this group made the most progressive works in the art world in America through formalism photography with hyper-realistic forms and images. After moving to San Francisco in 1946 and until the mid-1970s, Cunningham continued to work in the realm of experimental photography expressing pure plastic aesthetic of objects, in conjunction with commercial portraits and street documentary works, commissioned by Vanity Fair.

Nowadays Cunningham’s works are housed in world’s foremost institutions such as MoMA and Guggenheim in New York and managed by Imogen Cunningham Trust owned by her descendants. In 1975, Cunningham founded the Imogen Cunningham Trust. Unusual at that time, the establishment of the Trust shows Imogen's progressive aspirations, proactively planning for and creating an institution that would advance her photographic legacy with the intent that the work be accessible, actively seen and well-published.

This show would be a great chance to enjoy attractive aspects of Cunningham’s original vintage printing with twenty-five platinum prints and twelve gelatin silver prints.

As an exceptionally talented photographer, Imogen Cunningham communicated with people through taking pictures of the world where she lived over 70 years. People respected her sincerity , honesty, and frugal life-style. We will be able to encounter the history of photography blossoming and maturing as the 20th century art form by taking a journey through her footsteps over seven decades.
