PKM 갤러리는 베를린을 기반으로 서구 무대에서 활약 중인 가브리엘 봄스타인(Gabriel Vormstein, b.1974)의 개인전 《라이프LIFE》를 개최한다. 본 전시에서는 그의 이름을 알린 에곤 쉴레(Egon Schiele) 오마주 회화에서부터 최신 나무 조각까지 총 17점의 작업들이 국내 최초로 소개된다.

가브리엘 봄스타인은 특유의 기민한 조형 언어로 찰나, 허무, 무상함이라는 화두를 주시해왔다. 그는 폭발적으로 등장했다가 사그라지는 역사 속 미술 동향이나 시간의 흔적만이 남은 소재들을 포착하여 이를 재활용하는 방식으로 작품에 반영하고, 기존의 예술과 그 매체들에 물음을 던지는 작업을 지속하고 있다.

초라하면서(povera) 일시성을 지닌 신문지는 봄스타인 작업의 가장 주된 재료다. 재생지에 기사, 광고 등 정보의 그리드(grid)가 각인된 신문지 위에 이를 다시 연필과 물감으로 덧씌운 그의 작업은 물질들의 레이어링(layering)인 동시에 다양한 의미들의 복합체이다. 텍스트와 이미지가 침전물이 되어 서로를 뒤덮는, 언뜻 보이는 부분들만을 해독할 수 있는 이 신문 회화는 찢기기 쉬운 얇은 막 안에 여러 층위들을 내포한다.

초기 신문 작업에서 봄스타인은 유년 시절 영감을 받은 에곤 쉴레의 인물 도상들을 오마주했다. 끊임없이 소비되는 뉴스와 유약한 신체의 결합으로 죽음을 환기한 것이다. 최근의 신문 페인팅에서는 위기에 처한 동물들과 시듦을 내재한 꽃이 전면에 등장하는데, 이는 미술의 오랜 주제인 메멘토 모리(Memento Mori)와 연관한다. 최후의 무대를 뜻하는 '스완 송swan song'을 모티브로 한 작품 또한 덧없는 인생이 바로 삶이라는 사실을 노래한다.

한편, 나뭇가지는 봄스타인 작업의 또 다른 매체이다. 작가는 도시 환경의 파편이면서 신문처럼 그 자체의 그리드와 인덱스Index를 가지고 있고, 동시에 잘 부러지는 나뭇가지들로 의자나 알파벳 형태의 조각을 구성했다. 이와 같이 봄스타인은 휘발하거나 분해되기 쉬운 요소들을 끌어와, 이를 재구성하거나 다시 흩트리는 작업을 반복하고 있다. 이로써 구현된 유기적인 것과 기하적인 것, 오래된 과거와 그에 상호작용하는 현재, 삶과 죽음, 붙잡아도 흐트러지는 지점들 사이 다층적인 의미망을 관객들은 감각하게 되는 것이다.

칼스루헤 미술대학에서 수학한 봄스타인은 함부르크 미술관(Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz), 독일 연방은행(Deutsche Bundesbank), 뮌스터 문화센터(Kulturzentrum am Münster), 딜링겐 예술협회(Kunstverein Dillingen)와 같은 독일 내 유수 미술 기관에 더불어 네덜란드, 프랑스, 스페인, 노르웨이, 미국 등지에서 다양한 전시와 프로젝트를 전개했다. 그의 작품은 뒤셀도르프의 K21(Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen), 런던의 인디고 컬렉션(Indigo Collection), 나폴리의 모라 그레코 파운데이션(Fondazion Morra Greco), 마요르카의 CCA 안드락스(CCA Andratx) 등에 소장되어 있다.



PKM Gallery proudly presents a solo exhibition titled LIFE by Gabriel Vormstein (b.1974), who is an artist based in Berlin and has been active in Europe. In total of 17 works are on display at the exhibition for the first time in Korea, including his latest wood sculptures and paintings that he created in homage to Egon Schiele which eventually led him get recognized in the art world.

Vormstein has been focusing on the theme of transience, futility, and temporality with his distinctive and acute visual language. He takes and reuses subject matters that leave traces of time or that of art movements throughout history that emerge and fade to question the established criteria in art and its materials.

Vormstein mainly works with newspaper that is considered a ‘low,’ povera, and impermanent artistic material. He incorporates the process of covering the grids of information and advertisements inscribed on newspaper made of recycled paper with pencil and paint. Thus, the finalized paintings become layers of substances and a synthesis of diverse meanings. Texts and images intermingle on the painting surface which only some parts are decipherable; moreover, multiple layers are enclosed within the delicate and fragile surface of his paintings.

In his early paintings, Vormstein took figures from paintings by Egon Schiele, who was his main source of inspiration during his youth. The combination of constantly consumed news and feeble bodies recall the notion of death. Endangered animals and withered flowers that appear on his recent paintings are also related to the idea of ‘memento mori’ which has been recurrent theme in the history of art. Moreover, his paintings that took the motif from ‘swan song,’ meaning the final performance, also reminds one the fact that life is temporary.

On the other hand, tree branch is another material used by the artist. Vormstein creates sculptures in the shape of a chair and alphabet letter with branches that are fragments of city environment and have their own grid and index like newspapers. He chooses elements that are volatile and transience and repeats the process of reconfiguring and scattering them. The exhibition aims to provide multiple layers of meanings placed between the organic and the geometrical, the distant past and its corresponding present, and the various points that cannot be grasped.

Vormstein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe and has held numerous exhibitions and projects at prominent institutions within Germany including the Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, Deutsche Bundesbank, Kulturzentrum am Münster, Kunstverein Dillingen, and in countries such as the Netherlands, France, Spain, Norway, and the United States. His works are included in the collections of K21 - Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Düsseldorf), Indigo Collection (London), Fondazione Morra Grego (Naples), and CCA Andratx (Mallorca).
