선화랑은 2025년 12월 3일부터 31일까지 이만나( b.1971)의 개인전 《세계의 모퉁이 The Corner of the World》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 2022년 개인전 이후 3년 만에 선보이는 것으로, 대표 연작인 〈깊이 없는 풍경〉을 비롯해 신작 〈벽 앞의 풍경〉, 〈모퉁이〉, 〈길가〉 등이 포함된 회화와 드로잉, 총 18여 점의 작품이 출품된다. 이만나는 일상 속에서 포착한 순간의 감각을 기반으로, 현실의 풍경을 닮았지만 어딘가 낯설고 비현실적인 공간을 회화적으로 구축해온 작가다. 그의 회화는 특정 대상을 재현하는 듯 보이지만, 실재 너머의 감각과 정서, 그리고 세계의 보이지 않는 이면을 드러낸다.

이만나의 풍경은 현실과 비현실, 일상과 비일상 사이의 경계에 존재한다. 그것은 익숙한 장면이면서 동시에 쉽게 설명할 수 없는 무언가를 품고 있다. 작가가 화면 앞에서 반복적으로 색을 쌓고 그리는 과정은, 마치 그가 대상과 대화하듯 이뤄지는 시간의 축적이자 감각의 발굴이다. 색면 위에 얇고 투명하게 쌓여가는 물감의 층은 단순히 표면을 구성하는 것이 아니라, 비가시적 세계의 감정과 기억을 구현하며 회화에 울림과 깊이를 더한다.

이번 2025년 전시 《세계의 모퉁이》는 그 연장선에 있으면서도 다른 방향으로 확장된다. 작가는 이제 세계의 중심이 아니라, 보이지 않는 가장자리, 무심코 지나친 모퉁이, 누구의 시선에도 닿지 않은 장소를 바라본다. 그곳은 잊힌 자리이며 동시에 새로운 관찰이 시작되는 지점이다. 작가에게 모퉁이는 끝이 아니라 시작이며, 세계가 완결되는 지점이 아니라 여전히 열려 있는 틈이다.

그의 작품에 반복적으로 등장하는 가로막힌 벽이나 좁은 골목, 깊이를 알 수 없는 어두운 밤의 풍경은 단순한 공간 묘사가 아니라 존재론적 질문으로 이어진다. 독일 유학 시절 느꼈던 언어와 문화, 정체성의 간극은 그의 회화에서 ‘벽’이라는 형태로 결실했고, 이는 현실과 비현실을 잇는 상징으로 자리 잡았다. 작가는 그 벽 앞에서 멈춤의 감각을 경험하고, 관객 또한 그 순간의 에너지를 공유한다.

Sun Gallery presents The Corner of the World, a solo exhibition by Manna Lee (b. 1971), held from December 3 to 31, 2025. This exhibition marks the artist’s first solo presentation at the gallery in three years since his 2022 show, featuring approximately 18 works including paintings and drawings. The exhibition includes his representative series Depthless Landscape, as well as new works such as Landscape Before the Wall, Corner, and Roadside.

Manna Lee constructs pictorial spaces that resemble real landscapes yet feel strangely unfamiliar and unreal, drawing from sensory impressions captured in daily life. His paintings may appear to depict specific subjects, but they reveal sensations, emotions, and the unseen layers of the world that lie beyond the visible.

His landscapes exist at the boundary between reality and unreality, the everyday and the extraordinary. They are familiar scenes that nevertheless contain something elusive something not easily articulated. His working process, in which he repeatedly builds and paints layers of color, becomes a form of time accumulation and sensory excavation, as though he is engaging in a quiet dialogue with his subject. The thin, transparent layers of pigment on the color fields do more than form a surface; they embody emotions and memories from an invisible world, adding resonance and depth to her paintings.

The 2025 exhibition The Corner of the World extends this trajectory while opening in a new direction. Instead of focusing on the center, the artist now turns her gaze to the edges: unseen corners of the world, overlooked margins, and spaces that escape attention. These places are forgotten sites, yet also points from which new observation begins. For the artist, a corner is not an end but a beginning an opening rather than a closure.

Recurring motifs in his work blocked walls, narrow alleyways, and dark landscapes with unknowable depths are not merely depictions of space; they function as existential inquiries. The sense of linguistic, cultural, and identity gaps his experienced while studying in Germany crystallized into the visual motif of the “wall,” which became a symbol bridging reality and unreality. Pausing before this wall allows the artist to experience a moment of suspension, and viewers are invited to share in that energy.

Within his landscapes, nature and city, time and emotion, material and immaterial coexist in layered harmony. His paintings evoke sustained contemplation of what is disappearing, what has gone unnoticed, and what has become too familiar to truly perceive. His hopes for viewers to encounter unexpected moments of extraordinariness within the everyday moments that prompt them to pause and to discover the unfamiliar, mysterious qualities hidden inside the familiar world. Ultimately, he wishes to offer a space through which viewers may rediscover the world anew through their own senses and perspectives.
