갤러리담은 장현주 작가의 개인전 《초록의 임계 Threshold of Green》을 기획하였다.
장현주는 지난 20여 년간 장지에 먹, 목탄, 분채를 켜켜이 쌓고 다시 지우는 과정을 반복하며 화면을 만들어왔다. 그림을 그리고 지우는 행위 속에서 생겨나는 우연한 발묵과 잔상은 작가의 손이 아니라 시간이 그려낸 흔적에 가깝다. 《산, 산, 산》, 《숲, 깊어지다》, 《풀의 그늘》, 《어둠이 꽃이 되는 시간》을 거쳐온 그의 작업은 씨앗과 뿌리, 풀과 꽃, 산과 숲이라는 자연의 사소한 존재들을 통해 삶의 기억과 기다림의 시간을 응시해왔다.
이번 신작 《초록의 임계》는 부엌 창 너머로 마주한 산과 숲이 겨울의 비어 있음을 지나 오월의 빈틈없는 초록으로 차오르는 순간을 다룬다. 화면 속 색들은 풍경을 재현하기보다 서로 밀어내고 스며들며 하나의 덩어리처럼 증식하고, 빛조차 쉽게 들어가지 못하는 그 압축된 상태 안에서 여름은 조용히 부풀어 오른다. 작가에게 계절은 갑자기 오는 것이 아니라, 보이지 않는 진동이 오랜 시간 땅속에서 밀려 올라와 마침내 표면에 도달하는 순간이다.
겹겹이 쌓고 지우며 만들어낸 화면 위에서, 우리는 보이지 않던 기다림이 임계점을 넘어 초록으로 터져 나오는 풍경을 만나게 된다.

Gallery Dam presents Hyun-joo Jang's solo exhibition Threshold of Green, from July 1 to 15, 2026.
For over a decade, Jang has built her paintings through a repeated process of layering and erasing ink, charcoal, and pigment on jangji, a thick traditional Korean paper. The accidental ink-bleeding and afterimages that emerge from painting and erasing feel less like marks made by hand than traces left by time itself. Across exhibitions such as Mountain, Mountain, Mountain, Forest, Deepening, Shadows of the Grass, and When Darkness Becomes a Flower, her work has long observed the overlooked, ordinary presences of nature — seeds, roots, grass, and flowers, mountains and forests — as vessels for memory and the experience of waiting.
Her new body of work, Threshold of Green, follows the mountain and forest beyond her kitchen window as they move from winter's emptiness toward May's dense, unbroken green. Rather than depicting scenery, her colors push against and merge into one another, multiplying into a single mass; within that compressed density, where even light cannot easily enter, summer quietly swells. For Jang, the seasons do not arrive suddenly — they are invisible vibrations that have slowly risen from deep underground, finally reaching the surface.
Built up and erased layer upon layer, the surfaces in this exhibition reveal an invisible waiting breaking through its threshold into green.

여름은 어디로부터 오는 걸까.

부엌 창 너머로 산이 마주하고 있다.
겨울 동안 성기게 비어 있던 숲은 봄을 지나며 조금씩 차오르고, 오월이면 어느새 빈틈 없이 초록으로 메워진다.

어디서 날아왔는지 알 수 없는 새들의 울음이 숲을 가득 채우고, 햇빛의 방향에 따라 숨구멍 같은 잎 사이 틈으로 빛이 간혹 새어 나온다.
그 틈 안에서는 보이지 않는 어떤 것이 계속 자라나고 있다.

여름은 갑자기 오는 계절이 아니다.
땅속 깊은 곳의 진동들이 천천히 밀어 올린 시간이다.

이번 작업은 그 보이지 않는 진동이 표면에 도착한 순간의 풍경이다.
화면 속 색들은 풍경을 묘사하기보다 서로 밀어내고 스며들며 하나의 덩어리처럼 증식한다.
빛조차 쉽게 들어가지 못하는 그 압축된 상태 안에서, 여름은 조용히 부풀어 오른다.

여름은 응축된 시간이 부풀어 그 압력이 가장 짙어진 순간이다. 계절은 예고 없이 오는 것이 아니다. 보이지 않는 기다림이 한꺼번에 표면으로 밀려

나온 것이다.

Where does summer come from?
Beyond the kitchen window, a mountain stands facing the house.
The forest, sparse and hollow through winter, slowly fills as spring passes, and by May it is densely packed with green, without a single gap.
Birdsong from somewhere unknown floods the forest, and depending on the direction of the sunlight, light occasionally seeps through the pore-like gaps between leaves.
Inside those gaps, something invisible keeps growing.
Summer is not a season that arrives suddenly.
It is time slowly pushed upward by vibrations deep underground.
This body of work is the landscape of the moment when that invisible vibration reaches the surface.
Rather than depicting scenery, the colors on the surface push against and seep into one another, multiplying like a single mass.
Within that compressed state, where even light cannot easily enter, summer quietly swells.
Summer is the moment when condensed time swells and its pressure becomes most intense. The seasons do not arrive without warning — an invisible waiting has all at once been pushed out to the surface.
