‘흰’

화가는 이젤 앞에 서 있다. 그 대각선 방향의 맞은편에는 악기와 함께 첼리스트가 앉아있다. 곧 배우가 손에 책을 쥔 채 등장해서 자리에 앉아 책을 펴고 책 속의 문장들을 낮은 목소리로 천천히 읽는다. 이윽고 첼리스트는 그 목소리에 답하듯 첼로를 연주하고 화가는 그림 그리기를 시작한다. 이어서 한 무용수가 그들 사이에 나타나 공간의 새로운 꼭지점으로 선다. 그는 첼리스트의 연주와 배우의 목소리를 듣고, 화가의 몸짓을 잠시 지켜보다 움직임을 시작한다.

이 장면은 기획전 ‘흰’에 참여한 예술가들이 전시 준비를 위해 다섯 번에 걸쳐 진행했던 워크샵의 모습 중 일부이다. 강은나 무용수, 강찬욱 첼리스트, 김예은 배우, 류장복 화가는 한강의 소설 『흰』을 읽은 경험과 그 여운을 한 자리에 모여 이야기 하고, 이를 각자의 매체를 통해 표현하면서 유기적으로 서로의 감각을 연결시켰다. 배우의 목소리는 화가의 선과 면이 되고, 화가의 조형은 첼로의 또 다른 소리로, 소리는 무용가의 고유한 몸짓으로, 그들은 독립적으로 움직이지만 끊임없이 서로가 서로의 원인이 되는 관계를 형성하면서 그들 사이의 시공간을 감각으로 가득 메웠다.

이렇게 각각의 매체가 한 자리에서 따로 또 같이 얽혀있는, 어쩌면 조금은 무질서한 상황처럼 보이는 이 관계를 관통하고 있는 한 가지는 ‘흰’이라는 감각이다. 이 ‘흰’은 한강의 소설에서 출발하지만 그 곳에만 머무르지 않는다. 전시 준비 과정에서 진행되었던 워크샵을 지켜본 바 문학 『흰』의 서사에서 느껴지는 복합적인 감정선, 그에 나타난 삶과 죽음의 상징, 문장에서 드러나는 시각적 대비는 예술가들의 내면에 가닿아 창작을 추동시키고 더 나아가 그들의 삶을 사유하게 했다.

강은나 무용수는 ‘흰’이라는 단어로부터 죽음과도 같은 미지의 영역을 생각하였고, 강찬욱 첼리스트는 생의 끝자락에 서 있는 외조모와 나눈 삶에 대한 대화를 떠올렸다. 김예은 배우는 미술을 배우던 시절 하얀 도화지를 흰 파스텔로 덮을 때의 그 설레던 기억을 회상하였고, 류장복 화가는 『흰』에서 표상되고 있는 이미지가 까맣게 잊고 있었던 기억 속의 무언가를 건드려 더 짙은 이미지로 투사된다고 이야기하였다.

이처럼 책 속에 표현된 시공간과 사물은 예술가들의 기억과 만나면서 한 층 깊은 그들 내면의 감각을 끌어올렸고 그렇게 그들은 ‘흰’과 같은, 다시 말해 무엇이든 표현하고 투영할 수 있는 백지와도 같은 상태에 다다른 것처럼 보였다. 이 같은 상태에 놓인 예술가들은 각자 그림을 그리고, 낭독을 하며, 연주를 하고 춤을 추면서 하나의 차원을 만들고, 그 사이의 경계를 정의 내리기보다 상호적 영향관계 안에서 서로를 자연스럽게 받아들였다. 예술가들은 서로를 흡수하고 자신의 에너지를 확장하면서 모든 빛을 품고 있는 투명한 하얀색과도 같은 끝없는 가능성을 마주하였다.

이와 같은 시각예술과 공연예술의 협업은 이전부터 이루어져 왔기에 생소한 것은 아니다. 그러나 금번 전시에 참여하는 예술가들은 이 협업을 단순한 합주가 아닌 타자와 함께하는 하나의 과정이자 태도로서 여기고 어떤 매체가 주도적인 위치에 놓이지 않도록 공을 들였다. 그 결과 예술가들은 특정한 장르나 매체의 어법에서 빗겨나 진정한 의미의 미적 융합과 교류를 실천할 수 있었고, 보다 새로운 방식과 형태의 예술을 시도하고 지향할 수 있었다. 그들은 코로나 바이러스로 인해 사회적 거리가 멀어지고, 개인 간의 왕래가 적어지는 환경의 변화를 겪고 있는 상황 속에서도 서로 간의 수평적 연결이 관객에게까지 이어질 수 있도록 영상을 제작해 온라인으로 공개하고, 워크샵을 통해 제작된 작품을 포함한 시민 엽서 그림들을 전시장에 전시하였다. 이러한 협업의 과정과 결과물들에는 외부의 변화 속에서도 타자와의 관계를 지속하며 예술적 가치를 추구하려는 예술가들의 노력이 담겨있다고 생각된다.

기획전 《‘흰’》은 전통적인 전시의 형태에서 벗어나 문학에서 출발해 미술, 무용, 음악, 연극이라는 다수의 장르에 걸쳐있는 다면적인 전시다. 네 명의 예술가는 하나의 모티프에서 자기 자신을 탐색하고 그것을 거울삼아 여러 갈래의 작업을 펼쳐나간다. 또 한편으로 그들은 그것을 함께 이어서 매듭을 만든다. 이 과정 전체가 실은 나라는 내면을 들여다보고 상대방을 살피면서 서로 긍정적 에너지를 주고받는 삶에 대한 느슨한 은유일지도 모른다. 전시장을 찾은 관람객들도 전시장에서 작품을 관람하고, 온라인에 공개된 영상을 시청하면서 예술가들의 여정을 간접적으로 즐기고 그 안에서 그들이 찾은 가치에 공감해주기를 바란다. _■ 윤수정 (갤러리소소)


‘White’

The painter is standing before an easel. On the opposite side diagonally, a cellist is sitting together with a musical instrument. An actress appears, holding a book, sits down on a chair, opens a book, and slowly reads sentences in the book in such a low tone. The cellist plays the cello as if to respond to the voice, while the painter starts to draw a picture. Then, a dancer appears between them, and stands as a new vertex in the space. The dancer listens to the cello play and the actress’ voice, gazes at the painter’s movement momentarily, and starts to move.

This is a part of the workshop conducted for five times by the artists participating in the special exhibition ‘White’ as they prepared for the exhibition. Dancer Eunra Kang, cellist Chan Uk Kang, actress Yae Eun Kim and painter Jangbok Ryu share their experience of reading Korean novelist Han Kang’s novel “The White Book” and food for thought on the book. They express their feelings and thoughts on it through their medium of art, and connect each other’s senses organically. The actress’ voice turns into the painter’s line and plane, and the painter’s formation into the cello’s another sound, which in turn turns into the dancer’s unique movement. Though moving independently, they form a relationship of causality for one another endlessly, filling up the tempo-spatiality in between with senses.

There is one thing that penetrates into this relationship of a seemingly disorganized circumstance where various media are interlinked in the same place: the sense of ‘white’. The ‘white’ is derived from Han Kang’s novel, but goes beyond it. Having watched the workshop in preparing for the exhibition, complicated emotions in the narrative, symbols of life and death and visual contrasts revealed in sentences in novel “The White Book” drive creativity of the artists by touching their inner world, and invite them to contemplate over their life.

Dancer Eunra Kang conjured up the unknown like death from the word ‘white’, and cellist Chan Uk Kang thought of a conversation on life with his grandmother nearing her last moments to come, while actress Yae Eun Kim recalled her memory of excitement when she covered a white piece of paper with a white pastel when she learned art at school. Painter Jangbok Ryu said that the image symbolized in ‘The White Book’ touches something deep in his memory which he had never recalled to be projected as a deeper-toned image.

As such, the tempo-spatiality and objects expressed in the book came to be in touch with the memories of the artists to raise their inner senses that are deep inside. They seemed as if they reached a state of a blank piece of paper – like the ‘white’ – to express and reflect anything. The artists in such a state painted their own painting, recited a writing, played music and danced to make a single dimension, and instead of defining a boundary in between, they naturally embraced one another within the mutually influential relationship. The artists absorbed one another, expanded their energy, and encountered endless possibilities like the transparent white embodying all kinds of light.

Such collaboration of visual art and performance art is nothing new as it has been out there for long. Yet, the artists participating in this exhibition considered this work of collaboration not as a simple ensemble but as a process or an attitude to be united with others, trying to ensure no medium outruns another. As a result, the artists could practice a genuine sense of aesthetic fusion and exchange without sticking to a specific genre or medium. Even at a time when people are socially distanced due to the COVID-19, and undergo a big change in the environment of lesser socializing, they made a video for the horizonal connectedness to carried onto the audience and posted it online, while exhibiting citizens’ postcard paintings at the gallery including the works produced at the workshop. I think that such a collaborative process and outcome embody the efforts of artists striving to achieve artistic values, while maintaining relationships with others despite changes in the external setting.

The special exhibition 《‘White’》 is a multidimensional one encompassing multiple genres of fine art, dance, music and theatrical play by starting off from literature beyond the traditional exhibition format. The four artists explore themselves from a single motif, and develop different layers of works based on it. They also make a knot together by connecting them together. The entire process could be a loose metaphor of a life, looking into oneself, watching others, and exchanging positive energies to one another. It is hoped that the audience could look around works, and watch the video available online to relish the journey of the artists – albeit indirectly – and empathize with the values they have found within.
