고립의 상황에 놓이면, 현재를 이끌어낸 자신의 환경을 문득 되돌아보고 의미를 부여하게 된다. 이러한 과정은 고립된 사람에게 관찰자로서의 역할을 부여한다. 스스로를 물리적으로 둘러싼 것들뿐만 아니라 감정 및 심리에 영향을 미치는 것들에 대한 고찰이다.
톰 안홀트의 개인전 『낙화』는 고립의 경험을 회화의 세계 안에 풀어낸다. 자신만의 독창적 표현으로 구현한 세계다. 꿈처럼 짜깁기한 장면들과 변형되는 기억의 형상 가운데 때로 폭력적인 메타포가 나타나기도 한다. 작가가 드러내고자 하는 것은 사랑의 서사에 관한 실존적 경험이다. 사랑의 시작과 함께 낭만화되는 세계관과 그것이 불러오는 필연적인 상처들, 그로부터 크게 영향 받게 되는 꿈의 세계에 대한 것이다.

톰 안홀트의 화면은 다양한 경험의 시각적 복합체다. 작가는 특유의 회화 언어로 경험의 핵심을 향해 다가간다. 모호하고 거친 표면 위에 피어나는 인물들과 색면의 중첩은 사랑하는 이의 정서적 풍경을 묘사한다. 이 과정에서, 그는 서사의 망을 엮어낸다. 전체의 전시를 은연 중에 포괄하는 그물망이다. 어떠한 방식으로 읽힐지 정해진 바 없으나, 모든 작품을 서로 관계 맺도록 하는 하나의 서사다.

「부서진 바위」(2021)와 「인사가 아닌」(2021)의 화면은 버림받은 연인의 무력감을 묘사한다. 예기치 못한 죽음의 상황, 또는 익사의 위기 속에서 도움을 외면당한 이의 절망에 비유된다. 한편 「밤중의 만남」(2021)은 어두운 밤 잠정적 화해를 위해 만난 연인의 모습을 보여준다. 그와 대조적으로 「새로운 새벽」(2021)에는 자상한 모성을 연상시키는 인물이 등장한다. 이 전시에서 핵심적 역할을 하는 화면이다. 정갈한 표현과 낙관적인 분위기가 유독 돋보인다. 바위처럼 견고하게 그린 화면은 전체의 서사에 잠시 숨 고를 시간을 주는 것 같다. 그러나 안락함은 곧 파괴된다. 침대 아래 숨은 악몽 같은 존재가 사랑하는 이를 괴롭힌다.

벌을 받은 남자는 결국 용서받지 못할, 불가피한 고립의 상태에 놓인 자신을 발견하게 된다. 주위의 평범한 날들 가운데 「낯선 사람」(2021)은 습지의 동굴 속에 홀로 갇혀 있는 것이다. 극복할 수 없는 경계에 의해 소외되고, 단절된 인물이다. 전시명과 동일한 「낙화」(2021)의 화면은 전시를 구성하는 이야기 요소를 정제하여 드러낸다. 객관화와 추상화를 통해서다. 하나의 형상 속에 전체의 서사가 함축된다. 줄기로부터 떨구어진 꽃은 미약하게 살아 있으며 아직 죽지 않았다. 모든 이야기들이 이 장면에 귀결된다.
한편 달은 침묵하는 관찰자로서 가장 높은 곳에서 빛나고 있다. 연무 속에서 변모하는 빛이 만물에 장막을 드리운다.

톰 안홀트의 작업은 주로 콜라주 및 수채화 습작에서 시작된다. 조밀하게 중첩된 다층의 이미지를 회화의 화면으로 옮겨내는 것이다. 그는 특유의 영화적 감각으로 이미지를 제련하는데, 자르고, 편집하고, 확대한 장면의 다양한 층위가 하나의 서사를 완성해간다. 지난해 세계 곳곳에서 전시를 연 톰 안홀트는 이번 전시를 위해 다시금 심혈을 기울였다. 작가의 통찰과 정서를 성공적으로 드러내는 작품들을 한 데 모아 선보이는 자리다. ■ 펠릭스 폰 하젤베르크



When people are isolated, at a certain point, they find themselves forced to look closely at the circumstances that led up to this situation and invest it with meaning. This process gives the isolated person the quality of an observer—an observer of the things that surround him physically, but also of the things that move him emotionally and psychologically.

Tom Anholt's exhibition "Fallen Flower" translates one such experience of isolation into a pictorial world, which he realizes in his unique artistic style. In dreamlike sequences and through transfigured memories, sometimes even violent metaphors, what he outlines are also existential experiences of a love story: the romantically transfigured perception of the world as such a story begins, the injuries it inevitably brings, and the world of dreams that is so profoundly affected by it.

Anholt presents us with an intricate visual conglomeration of a collective experience, and he approaches the core of that experience with a particular form of expression. Blurred and roughened surfaces, billowing figures and overlapping colour fields depict a lover's emotional landscape. In this process, Anholt spins a narrative network that subtly runs through the exhibition and allows all the works to correspond without predefining how this narrative is to be read.
The works "Broken Rock" and "Not Waving" describe the helplessness of a jilted lover— unsuspectingly in danger of being crushed to death or denied help while drowning—and in "Night Meet", the lovers unite for a nocturnal truce. In contrast, the almost maternal, nurturing figure portrayed in "New Dawn" plays a prominent role. With its clean execution and optimistic lighting mood, the work stands out from the rest of the exhibition. Firm as a rock, it provides a brief respite in the narrative, only to be violently disrupted by a nightmare figure haunting the lover from under his bed.
Eventually, the chastened man finds himself in an unforgiving and inevitable state of isolation. While those around him seem to go about their daily lives casually, "The Stranger" is stuck in his swampy cave; marginalized, cut off by insurmountable boundaries. The eponymous work "Fallen Flower" distills the exhibition's material, allowing detachment and abstraction, enabling the artist to bring everything into focus in a condensed form. The single flower cut from its stem, barely alive but not yet dead— everything leads to this work.
And the moon, a silent observer, shines above everything and shrouds all that is happening in its hazy, transfiguring light.
Tom Anholt's works often originate from collages and watercolour studies. His densely layered imagery is then transposed into painting, refined with a specific cinematic sensibility; cuts and crops, zooms and layers form a narrative. After a year of exhibitions worldwide, the artist has focused his efforts once again to create this insightful and sensitive compilation of works. ■ Felix von Haselberg
