  • Press Release

Sungkok Art Museum presents a photography exhibition of Arno Fischer (1927-2011), an East German photographer and an iconic figure in the history of German photography. Covering his entire career as a photographer, from 1953, before the Berlin Wall was built, through 1989, the year of the Berlin Wall’s fall, to 2011, the year of his death, the exhibition introduces over 180 vintage prints including gelatin silver prints and Polaroid pictures.

Born in Wedding, Berlin, Fischer began as an apprentice carpenter training in skills such as wood patternmaking, and then studied sculpture at art schools in both East and West Berlin for six years from 1947 with the aim of becoming a sculptor, before he discovered photography and dropped out of art school. He then explored every corner of his hometown Berlin with his camera, capturing scenes of everyday life in East and West Berlin in his photographs over a period of around seven years. Later, when Berlin was divided into East and West, the pictures that he had taken for practice became recognized for their historical value, since they encapsulated vivid images of Berlin in the immediate aftermath of World War II.

After earnestly starting his career as a photographer in the 1950s, he spent the next 28 years from 1966 with his partner, photographer Sibylle Bergemann, hosting gatherings of innovative artists to discuss new art in the couple’s apartment at Schiffbauerdamm 12. Fischer was always the one to lead such discussions, which involved many photographers from the GDR and around the world, such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Helmut Newton, Robert Frank, Barbara Klemm, and Ellen Auerbach. Furthermore, Fischer taught photography and design as a professor at universities in Leipzig, Berlin, and Dortmund, which greatly influenced three generations of photographers in both East and West Germany.

Throughout most of his career, Fischer’s photographs featured life in East Germany, or the German Democratic Republic (GDR). In the 1950s, he began to gain recognition with his photographs of a divided Berlin, which became well-known as a series of photographs titled Situation Berlin that documented the social, cultural, and political situation in both East and West Berlin. Fischer later showed an interest in fashion photography by working for Sibylle, a women’s fashion magazine in the GDR, while also building a reputation as a travel photographer through works depicting faraway locations such as New York, Africa, and India. As such, this exhibition consists of five parts, each themed after Situation Berlin, fashion, New York, travel photography, and Polaroid photographs that captured the garden of his house in his later years.

This exhibition is hosted by ifa(Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), a representative organization for international cultural relations founded to promote German culture around the world, and curated by Matthias Flügge, a historian of photography who was also a close friend of Arno Fischer. As a vivid testimony to the vibrance of the German people and German culture as witnessed by an artist who experienced both the division and reunification of Germany, Fischer’s photographs certainly breathe life into the history of a bygone era. His works may also be particularly evocative for the Korean people, who continue to live under national division, finding parallels in Fischer’s legacy of fighting for his life and artistry as a photographer and educator throughout Germany’s turbulent history. His photographs subtly resonate with modern viewers and allow them to empathize with ordinary people captured in the photographs, who sought to live their ordinary lives beyond the boundaries of social and political ideologies. This is truly demonstrative of the close and inalienable connection between photography and our everyday lives. As we find ourselves inundated with digital images in the modern age, the exhibition also represents a special opportunity for us to experience and appreciate “real photographs” hand-printed by the artist himself.
