“Life is the Heart of a Rainbow”는 동남아시아에서 최초로 열리는 야요이 쿠사마(b. 1929)의 대규모 개인전이다. 이번 전시에서는 대중에 소개된 적이 없던 작품을 포함하여 1950년대부터 현재까지 제작된 회화, 조각, 영상, 설치 등의 작품을 통해 쿠사마의 창의적 시각을 탐구한다. 무한 거울방이나 물방울 무늬, 호박 모티프 등 쿠사마의 상징적인 작품들을 한 자리에서 볼수 있는 이번 전시에서는 작가가 지리학적 경계를 넘어 공명하는 작품을 제작하기 위해 사회적 장애물과 사적인 어려움에 어떻게 저항하였는지에 주목한다. 본 전시는 싱가폴 내셔널 갤러리와 호주 브리즈번의 Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA)의 협업으로 마련되었으며, QAGOMA에서 순회전이 있을 예정이다.

“Life is the Heart of a Rainbow” is the first major survey of Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929, Japan) in Southeast Asia. The exhibition invites audiences to discover Kusama’s creative vision through a selection of more than 120 paintings, sculptures, videos and installations from the 1950s to the present, including works never-before-seen in public. “Kusama’s world,” according to Russell Storer, Deputy Director of the National Gallery Singapore, “is complex: full of colour and powerful symbolism. In each of her works you are transported into a universe that is deeply intimate as well as potentially boundless.” Bringing together Kusama’s infinity mirror rooms, infinity net paintings, and her iconic dots and pumpkin motifs, the exhibition examines how the artist defied personal and societal challenges to develop a practice that has transgressed the major art movements—Minimalism, Performance, Abstract and Conceptual art, etc.—of Post-War and Contemporary art, creating works that resonate beyond geographical boundaries and into the public imagination. This exhibition is a a collaboration between the National Gallery Singapore and Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane, Australia. The exhibition will travel to QAGOMA.
