Gallery Hyundai is presenting the solo exhibition Will There Be an Answer? by Woosung Lee from March 18 to April 26, marking the first solo presentation by Woosung Lee with Gallery Hyundai. Working under the theme of everyday life and art, the artist experiments the act of drawing and the expressive possibilities of painting through drawing, painting, and animation. Focusing on everyday appearances of figures around him, Lee now turns his attention to landscapes that encompass multilayered time and senses, by presenting more than forty new works, which includes large-scale hanging paintings and canvases.

As the artist notes, “For me, people are figured by expressions and messages. My work is all about translating those into paintings. What matters most is that we are all living through the same time, and that shared time is the thread that connects me to everyone else.” In this sense of everyday practice, his work resonates with the legacy of the Korean Minjung (people’s art) art movement of the 1980s, yet it differs in that it does not encompass political declarations or ideological frameworks. While the artist has previously presented figure-centered paintings, the works newly presented in Will There Be an Answer? focuses on faces as landscapes. The question posed in the exhibition title expands beyond the notion of the other to emcompass the landscape, the moment itself, and the self present within it, guiding viewers toward a dimension of sensation and memory that lies beyond immediate reality.

갤러리현대는 이우성 작가의 개인전 《너에게 물으면 알 수 있을까?》를 3월 18일부터 4월 26일까지 개최한다. 이번 전시는 이우성과 갤러리현대가 함께하는 첫 개인전이다. 작가는 ‘생활과 미술’을 주제로 드로잉, 회화, 애니메이션 등 다양한 매체를 활용하며 그리는 행위의 의미와 회화의 표현 가능성을 실험해 왔다. 한동안 주변 ‘인물’의 일상적 모습을 중심으로 작업해 온 작가는 이번 전시에서 대형 걸개그림과 캔버스 신작 40여 점을 통해 다층적인 시간과 감각을 포괄하는 ‘풍경’에 주목한다.

“저에게 사람은 모든 것이 표정이고 메시지입니다. 그것을 그림으로 옮겨 그리는 것이 저의 작업이지요. 중요한 것은 우리가 같은 시간을 살고 있다는 것, 그것이 당신과 연결된 끈입니다”는 작가의 말처럼 ‘일상적 실천’이라는 점에서 그의 작업은 한국 민중미술과 연결되지만, 정치적 선언이나 이데올로기적 배경을 포괄하지 않는 점에서 차이를 지닌다. 이전까지 작가는 ‘인물’ 중심의 회화를 선보였던 작업의 흐름 속에서 이번 전시작은 ‘풍경으로서의 얼굴’로 보여진다. 전시 제목 《너에게 물으면 알 수 있을까?》에서 ‘너’는 타자라는 개념에서 확장되어, 풍경과 그 순간, 그리고 그때의 ‘나’까지 아우르며, 관객을 현실 너머의 감각과 기억의 차원으로 이끈다.
