“Pixel on Canvas” - 픽셀에 더해진 상상력

사람은 필연적으로 여러 시각 정보를 접하며 살게 되는데, 특히 시각이 발달한 경우 눈을 뜨고 있는 동안 접하게 되는 모든 이미지와 시각 정보는 더욱 예민하고 날카롭게 다가와 각인된다. 이 수 많은 이미지들 중에서 요즘 픽셀(Pixel)에 주목하게 되었는데, 특히 디지털 이미지에서 사용되는 정방형의 픽셀에 강한 끌림을 느꼈다. 픽셀은 결국 조형요소의 가장 기본인 점(Dot)의 특징과 동일하겠지만 좀 더 독특한 특징을 가지고 있다고 생각된다.

어떤 이미지를 표현하기 위한 기초적인 조형요소라는 부분에서는 점과 같으나, 픽셀은 상이한 이미지들을 자연스럽게 결속시키거나 충돌시켜 새로운 긴장감을 만들어 내는 특성이 있다.
픽셀은 구상과 비구상, 원색과 혼색, 직선과 곡선 등의 여러 이미지들을 자연스럽게 결합하거나 때로는 서로 충돌시켜 색다를 에너지를 파생시키는 효과를 주며, 사진, 회화 같은 사실적인 이미지들과도, 캐릭터, 만화, 게임 등의 디지털 이미지와도 자연스럽게 결합되는 유연한 연결고리 역할을 한다. 픽셀의 이런 특징은 화면의 구성에만 국한된 것이 아니다. 픽셀의 완성되지 않은 듯한 이미지는 동양화의 여백처럼 미완의 상상력을 자극시켜 감상자의 각자 느낌대로 완결되게 해주며 그 과정에서 감성을 건드리기도 한다. 픽셀이 주는 단순하고 명확하지 않은 이미지는 미술, 사진, 영화, 음악, 게임, 인터넷 등 여러 분야의 이미지들과도 독특하게 혼재되며, 동서양과 시대를 넘나드는 다양한 문화와 시각 소재들을 불러 일으키는 연상작용을 한다. 픽셀은 강하고 고유한 개성을 가지고 있는 동서양의 전통적인 이미지도 무국적의 감성으로 중화시켜 버리는 독특한 필터작용을 하며, 레트로한 감각을 주는 과거의 소재에서부터 현대적인 소재까지 한 화면에 구현할 수 있게 한다는 점에서 창작욕을 자극하는 매력적인 소재이다.
픽셀은 또한 입체적인 공간으로의 확장성도 가지고 있다. 정방형의 픽셀은 자연스럽게 3차원의 공간에 놓여진 정육면체의 큐브(Cube)를 떠올리게 하며, 여러 물체들이 결합되고 구축된 입체적인 작품의 이미지를 쉽게 연상할 수 있게 해준다. 스케치한 작품을 입체로 제작한다고 상상 했을때 내 머리 속에 있는 이미지와 다른 사람이 떠올리는 이미지에 큰 오차가 없을 것같다.

기본적인 큰 구도를 만든 후 여러 픽셀이미지를 배치하거나, 반대로 픽셀이미지를 먼저 배치하고 순차적으로 연상되는 소재들을 삽입하고 구축적으로 배치하는 방식으로 작업을 진행했다. 꼬리를 물고 떠오르는 다양한 소재들을 검색하고 선정하는 사고의 즐거움, 소재들의 형태와 색채의 조화, 충돌을 고려하여 배치하는 구성의 즐거움, 자전거의 바퀴처럼 이 두 가지 즐거움이 작업과정을 이끌어 가는 주요 동력이었다. 친근한 소재들이고 작품을 보면 금방 이해할 수 있는 어렵지 않은 주제라고 생각한다.

-One’s imagination on Pixel

People inevitably live with multiple visual information, which are so sensitive and sharp. Among the numerous images, we are now paying attention to pixels, especially square pixels used in digital images. Pixel has a similar characteristic with a dot, which is the most basic of the form factor, but it is more distinctive to the features of the dot.

Although they share common ground in the basic building blocks for expressing an image, pixels are, above all, characterized by combining disparate images such as concepts and non-concepts, primary colors and compound colors, and straight lines and curves in a natural way or colliding them to create new tensions. Also, it has a flexible connection that naturally combines realistic images such as pictures and paintings with digital images like characters, cartoons and games. These characteristics of pixels are not limited to the structure of the work. The less complete image of the pixel stimulates the viewer's imagination, like the “Margins of Oriental painting”, to encourage their respective interpretations and stimulate their emotion in the process. The characteristics of these pixels are harmonious with images from various fields such as art, photography, movies, music, and games, and are reminiscent of various cultures and materials throughout the East and the West and throughout the ages.
Secondly, pixel has a unique filter function that neutralizes the traditional images of East and West, there by being beyond one's nationality, and can be implemented on a single canvas, from past materials that give a retro touch to modern materials. This is an attractive point in that it stimulates viewers' desire to create.
Finally, pixels have the ability to expand into three-dimensional space. Square pixels naturally remind us of cubes placed in a three-dimensional space. So, pixels make it easy to arrange images of three-dimensional works. When imagining that sketched works are produced in three dimensions, it can narrow the gap of the image between the artist's intention and the viewer's point of view.

After creating a basic composition, the work was drawn by placing multiple pixel images or vice versa first, inserting sequentially reminiscent materials, and placing them constructively. The joy of searching for and selecting a wide range of continuously emerging materials, the harmony of shapes and colors of the materials, the joy of the configuration in consideration of the collision of material. These two factors were the main driving force behind the work process, like the two wheels of a bicycle. The materials used in the works are so friendly that it is not difficult to understand a piece of work.
