회화의 껍질
거무튀튀한 색의 거친 붓질들로 캔버스 표면이 가득 채워져 있다.
더 가까이 다가가니 여러 붓질의 흔적들이 서로 겹치고 엉키고 중첩되어 거대한 캔버스를 점령하고 있다.
리듬감 있는 붓의 흔적들에 의해 수많은 골들이 만들어지고, 그것들은 무언가를 덮는 듯 혹은 지우는듯 그림 안에 존재한다.
그림은 이렇듯 저마다의 피부를 가지고 있다.
이 피부들은 얇아보이지만 때때로 아주 깊어 보인다.

회화의 층
삶은 어차피 반복의 연속이다. 의미있는 삶은 의미있는 반복을 하는 것이다. 작가로서 의미있는 반복은 무엇일까 고민해본다.
오늘도 절반만 이해하는 신문을 본다. 역시 요즘 주인공은 트럼프다. 입을 꽉 다문 트럼프의 얼굴이 맨 앞 페이지에 보인다. 몇장을 넘기니 완전 폐허가 된 예맨의 이름 모를 도시 속에, 역시 폐허가 된 건물들 앞에서 총을 맨 젊은 청년이 이슬람식 모자를 쓰고 두려운 듯 정면을 응시하고 있다.
그 신문을 겹겹이 아크릴 미디움을 연속해서 발라 한 덩어리로 만든다. 아직 마르지 않은 상태의 신문 덩어리는 유연하다. 무엇으로도 변할 수 있는 ‘가능’의 상태이다. 여기에 나의 의도들이 개입한다. 마르지 않은 신문을 구기고 펴고를 여러차례 반복한다. 그리고 물감을 바른 다음 다시 말린다. 마른 신문 덩어리는 마치 시간이 굳어진 화석처럼 단단하다. 이 화석을 반복적으로 갈아낸다.표면은 드러낸 것과 감추어진 것이 어우러진다.

Skin of Painting
The surface of the canvas is fully filled with sooty, rough brush strokes. Coming closer, the strokes' traces overlap, stacking and tangling, occupying the huge canvas. Many valleys are made by the traces of those rhythmic brushes, and they exist in the picture as if they were covering something- or erasing it. Pictures have their own skin like that. These skins look thin, but sometimes, they look very deep.

Painting of layer
Life is a continuation of repetition, anyway. Meaningful life does meaningfully repeat. As an artist, I wonder what meaningful repetition is.
Today I see a newspaper that only half-understands, as usual. Trump is the main character these days too. The face of tight-lipped Trump is on the front page. Turning a few more pages, I see an unknown city in Yemen has been razed to the ground. In the middle of the city a young man with a shouldered gun stands in front of ruined buildings, gazing into the camera.
The newspaper is made into a lump of continuous layers by acrylic paint. Newspaper not yet dry is flexible. It is a state of possibility that can change into anything. Here my intentions intervene. Unfold and spread the not-as-yet-dry newspaper. Repeat several times. Then apply the paint and let dry again. The mass of dried newspaper is as hard as time - a hardened fossil. Grate this fossil repeatedly. The exposed and the hidden thing mingle on the surface.
