(Avoir and Être/To Have and To Be)

Kwang Sung Park’s painting: (Avoir and Être/To Have and To Be)
Yeon Shim Chung (Professor at Hongik University)

After immigrating to France in 1991, Kwang Sung Park has not had much interaction with the Korean art scene. Park was born in Korea but his name is still unknown in the Korean art scene, compared to his international career in Europe and North America. Despite the fact that the artist received international acknowledgement of his work and achieved painterly maturity to have a solo exhibition in Korea, he has defined himself as a diaspora artist on foreign soil for a long time. Through his acting of utterly isolating himself, the artist has vigorously cultivated his artist spirit, creating paintings that seek the answer to the question of To Have and To Be. That is also the question about the very essence of life.

Kwang Sung Park’s painting imprints and accumulates the philosophical question of having and being on canvas. To him, the idea of being ultimately lies in the way of expressing the issue of existence and the irrationality of life and at once is a long journey in search of the Sartre’s idea of essence. Such a journey is sensed not only through his identity as a nomadic artist but also in his painterly brushwork, textures, and traces. From a distance, Park’s work appears as if it is an out of focus digital photograph taken by accident. From a distance, viewers can sense the force of life that a human being is struggling to eject towards the light within the abyss. All these things occur simply on the surface of painting.

In the late 80s and early 90s, when Kwang Sung Park began to work as an experimental artist, the Korean art scene was being divided into two: Dansaekhwa, the abstract art movement and Minjung art (the People’s art) which emphasized the political role and practice in art. In the late 80s when the Small Group Movement began in Korea, the paintings he saw still seemed to be at a standstill under the influence of the West. In order to overcome such a situation, Park decided to study in Paris, France- the mainstream art world where painting theories had been developed. Although he experimented with various motifs in Paris, his tendencies observed in his earlier work in Korea largely disappeared. Instead, he focused on three colors: black, white and as well as gray which is subtly created between them.

From far away, these three colors seem simple. Upon observing the surface from up close, however, the soft flow of the lines effacing the boundaries between the lines takes viewers to the point of being able to imagine those moments of the painter moving his wrist at ease and catching his breath. The artist’s brushwork itself ejects ki(氣) or energy. While demonstrating the most exemplary matiere that can be achieved in oil painting, his work effectively displays the profound depth of the ink stick in the traditional Eastern painting and the smudging effect of the ink often observed in yi pi hui zhi(一筆揮之) painting, meaning writing with a single stroke of brush. In the case of landscape paintings, they superbly deliver the medium-oriented effect of smudging and the mutual permeating effect that occurs between empty space and ink stick, despite the fact that they are painted on canvas.

The motifs the artist chooses from are very simple. Even though he chose uncomplicated motifs such as a figure, landscape, and nude, he does not present the individuality of a certain character, specific site of a landscape painting, and nudity that emphasizes the gender of a specific male or female. Kwang Sung Park’s figures convey an aura of an unspecified men or women that arouses our memory. Rather than relating them to the idea of identity, such as specificity, individuality, anonymity, they conjure up the images those characters suggest and the atmosphere those memories deliver in response to the image.

As if a hidden thing surfaces, the white brush-touch appears warm as the light in the darkness. The stark contrast between black and the white, through the artist’s unique sfumato technique, moderates the perfect contrast. The surface of a painting delivers its own surge and aura and allows us to sense the primordial life or being that precedes the emergence of the human race. Although the characters in his paintings do not specify a certain individual, they, for that reason, remind us of arbitrary individuals we might have briefly encountered at some point.

Then what is the meaning and autonomy of painting the artist from Korea can independently construct upon the Western-led foundation of painting? To answer such a question, he, as an emerging experimental artist, began to make his presence known in France and Germany, giving up on the Korean art scene after his last exhibition at the Batanggol Museum. As he was studying painting again in France and worked in Essen, Germany, Kwang Sung Park has persistently addressed a set of questions. What is the essence of painting and the philosophical theme of his work the artist would like to address in the two-dimensional surface called a canvas? If a painter were to visually show their theme through a painting, what would a painting surface and a brush be able to depict and display?

Amid these questions, Kwang Sung Park seems to have found the answer from the canvas surface and brush. In the Eastern tradition of ink-and-wash painting, a brush functioned as an outlet through which to express a writer’s spirit and energy. A brush is the same as the bearer’s body and, in a broad sense, spirit as well. While writers expressed their thoughts through writing a poem in a painting, Kwang Sung Park, through painterly images and surfaces, responds to the issue of being and having which has been the oldest concern of human beings.

Therefore, the work he has cultivated through practicing painting is equivalent to the act of philosophical writing, philosophical thinking in reflection of his long life journey. The reason he limits his subjects to a narrow range of figures and landscapes is because, to him, the act of painting is to record an act after all. The reason why his paintings leave such impressions as resonant, tremor, surge, remnant, return, recall, and aura is perhaps because of this singularity which Kwang Sung Park’s paintings keep a record of.
