갤러리팩토리에서 열리는 이번 전시는 “under the coral-like blue concrete” 라는 제목으로 연결된 일련의 조각 설치물을 소개한다. 작가의 작업은 형식적인 구조물의 디자인을 기반으로 하여, 투영 화된 decor의 의미를 통해 우리의 주변 환경을 은밀히 숨기기도 하고 더욱 드러내기도 하는데 이러한 공간의 구조 디자인은 한편으론 본래의 공간적 맥락을 끌어드리기도 조작하기도 한다. 주변적 구성(ambient constructions)으로 작용하는 설치 작업들은 특정적인 의미나 묵상을 위한 매체를 제공하기 보다는 보는 이의 움직임에 영향 주며 주어진 공간의 새로운 경험과 인식을 의도한다. 이러한 환경 조성물로서 본 작업은 갤러리의 조건과 디스플레이의 전형적 방법을 참조한다. 작품은 보는 이에게 설정된 환경 즉 일상의 공간과 건축물, 구조면에서 모던이즘의 형식을 쉽게 연상케 하지만 단호히 서술적이지 않은 방법으로, 어떤 특정한 개인적인 참조를 떠나 여러 측면에서 접근을 이끌어 낼 수 있는 기점으로 작용할 수 있도록 의도되었다. 철재, 나무, 유리와 조명등의 요소들로 만들어진 두 개의 커다란 벽 같은 구조물은 실재 공간의 건축구조를 하나의 요소로 통합하는 역할을 함과 동시에 바닥의 설치된 여러 개의 분칠된 철판들의 배경 막으로 사용된다. 각각의 작업들은 여러 겹으로 구성되어 있는데, 서로 결합되고 겹쳐지는 긴장감 있는 관계 속에서 표면들은 (영화관이나 극장에서 일반적으로 사용되는 라이트 젤을 포함한 여러 겹의 표면) 방해되거나 들어나게 된다.

근본적으로 작업 자체가 우리의 환경과의 경험을 관심사로 두기 때문에 작가의 설계적인 작업 방법론은 작업 내에서의 제작 방식을 중요시 한다. 실제로 본 전시는 작가의 작업의 현재까지도 불분명하게 남아있는 어떻게 보면 진행 중인 이러한 성격을 명확하게 보여주는 것으로 의도 되었다. 분위기보다도 주변적 구성(ambient)이 목적이며, 회화적 공간 보다는 현재를 명시는 것이 중요하고 사물들이 비슷한 역할을 인용하고 모방하기보단 그 자신의 역할을 구축하도록 하는 본인의 작업은, 시간에 대한 지각, 현재를 경험하게 하는 특징을 가진다 하겠다. 이러한 사고관은 이 전시를 움직였을 뿐 아니라 또한 가까운 미래의 작업의 방향을 제시할 것이다.

under the coral-like blue concrete
For my exhibition at Factory Gallery I am presenting a group of new sculptural-installation works, entitled "under the coral-like blue concrete". My practice is based around the design of formal structures that incorporate (and manipulate) their spatial context, at once revealing and concealing our surroundings by means of a projected decor. These new works operate as explicitly ambient constructions that seek to affect a viewer's movement, experience and perception of a given space, rather than provide vehicles for specific meaning or contemplation. As such they refer to the conditions of the gallery and the conventions of display.

The works do though evoke motifs familiar from the built environment - both the spaces and constructions of everyday culture as well as those of modernism - but in a resolutely ambiguous non-narrative way, allowing for associations beyond any individual reference. Two large-scale wall-like structures made of construction materials such as metal, wood, glass, and lighting elements, annex the existing architecture and provide a backdrop for a number of smaller powder-coated metal works that sit on the ground. Each of these works comprise numerous layers, superimposed or stacked on one another, blocking or revealing other surfaces including sheets of richly coloured lighting gel, ordinarily used in the theatre or film industries.

While the work is essentially concerned with our experience of environment, my development of a design-based methodology acknowledges the importance of the mode of production within my practice. Indeed, the structures that make up this exhibition are intended to clarify aspects of my work that until recently have been left unclear. The works are ambient rather than atmospheric, designate actual rather than pictorial spaces, and constitute their own function rather than appropriate or imitate the likeness of function. Distinctions such as these have not only directed my thinking about this exhibition, but also point to the immediate future of my work.
