갤러리조은은 최명애(b.1951)의 개인전《My Garden 나의 정원》을 7월 13일부터 8월 5일까지 개최한다. 작가의 정원에는 구름, 바람, 돌, 식물, 나무, 비, 향기, 곤충, 새 등 그림의 소재와 작업에 에너지와 위로를 주는 뮤즈들이 가득하다. 정원에서 시간을 보내며 작가에게 스며든 이미지, 색, 감정, 냄새의 파편들이 작가 특유의 다채로운 색감과 추상 표현주의적 방식으로 표현된다.

전쟁, 기후 등 현재 인류가 직면한 사회적 주제를 다루기보다 아름다움이 세상을 구원하리라 믿는 작가에게 정원에서 보내는 시간은 느리지만 재충전의 시간이다. 정원을 주제로 한 작가의 작업은 전쟁 중에도 빛과 색, 선의 세계 속에서 아름다움의 정수를 뽑아낸 마티스의 유미주의자적 성향과 닮아있다. 작가는 매일 자신이 다듬어 가는 정원에서, 순간, 순간 숙성된 사유를 끄집어낸다. 정원과 교감으로 유발하는 작가의 사유는 끝없이 반복된다.

때로는 동양 사상과 연결되는 사유의 흔적들을 작업에서 읽을 수 있다. 작가 특유의 자유로운 필체와 붓의 움직임이 동양화의 운필법을 연상시킨다. 이에 정종효 부산시립미술관 학예실장은 “붓으로 색을 칠하는 것이 아니라 색칠과 더불어 붓의 움직임에서 나오는 필력이 그대로 화면에 반영되고 그림에서 기운생동(氣韻生動)으로 작용한다는 것이다. 색은 다시 빛과 어우러져 구름, 산, 돌, 꽃, 나무, 벌레, 새 등 사물들을 표현하는 응물상형(應物象形)을 반영하고 그 기본은 붓의 움직임과 기운을 기저로 하고 있음을 알고 있다”고 평한다.

최근 작업에서 많이 볼 수 있는 표현 중의 하나가 원형의 연결성이다. 꽃 혹은 꽃봉오리를 연상시키는 크고 작은 형태의 유기체들이 화면 위에 묘한 평온함을 가져다 주며 작품에 한층 더 깊어진 유연함과 감수성을 더한다. 마치 꿈틀거리는 자연의 생명을 품은 원형질과 같다. 20년 동안 직접 다듬어 온 작가의 정원이 고스란히 캔버스로 옮겨 오면서 보는 이들에게 자연의 에너지와 위로를 선사한다.

최명애의 작품은 사회변혁의 도구로써도 그 기능이 확장된다. 정종효 실장은 최명애의 작업이 “자연을 통해서 인간에게 경고의 메시지를 전달하고자 한다”고 말하는데, 무지와 탐욕으로 인류가 더 이상 자연이 주는 생명과 위로를 얻지 못할 수도 있다는 사실을 환기한다. 이에 최명애의 정원은 보는 이들로 하여금 단순한 장식이나 휴식의 공간을 넘어 ‘때로는 상징적이고, 때로는 명상적이며, 또 가끔은 반성적인’ 무한의 공간으로 끌어가는 힘이 있다.

서울대 미대 서양학과, 서울대 미학과 석사를 마치고, 하와이대학 미술대학원에서 서양화를 졸업한 작가는 2022년 갤러리조은에서의 개인전을 시작으로, Kiaf +, 아트부산등 국내 주요 페어에 연이어 소개되며 국내 미술 시장에 성공적인 자리매김을 하고 있다. 본 전시에서 2미터가 넘는 대형 유화 ‘빛의 숲’부터 인간과 자연의 관계를 다룬 드로잉 소품까지 다채로운 25점의 신작을 통해 자연의 정원이 주는 경이로운 생명력과 위로를 선사할 예정이다.


Gallery Joeun is pleased to present "My Garden," a solo exhibition by Choi Myung-Ae (b. 1951), from July 13 to August 5. The artist's garden is full of muses that give energy and comfort to the subjects of my paintings: Clouds, wind, stones, plants, trees, rain, smells, insects and birds. Fragments of images, colors, emotions and smells that permeated the artist during her stay in the garden are expressed in the artist's unique bright colors and abstract expressionist style of painting.

For the artist, who believes that beauty will save the world rather than humanity's social problems such as war and climate, time spent in the garden, though slow, is a time to recharge. The artist's work in the garden resembles Matisse's esthetic tendency to elicit the essence of beauty from the world of lines, colors and light, even in war. Each day that she prunes in the garden, the artist brings to light, moment by moment, the reasons for ripening. The thoughts of the artist, evoked by the relationship with the garden, repeat endlessly.

At times, traces of thoughts associated with Eastern esthetic philosophy can be detected in the work. The artist's unique free brush movements are reminiscent of the brushstroke method of extreme oriental painting. Cheong Jong-Hyo, chief curator of Busan Art Museum, commented, "It is not about simply applying colors with a brush, but reflecting the vitality and energy of the brush in the painting and creating a sense of rhythmic vitality. The colors, in harmony with the light, reflect the representation of objects such as clouds, mountains, rocks, flowers, trees, insects and birds, and embody the principle of correspondence between painting and reality."

One striking expression frequently seen in her recent work is the shapes of circles. Large and small shapes of organisms, reminiscent of flowers or buds, bring a strange calm to the canvas and give the work a deeper flexibility and sensibility. It is as if the protoplasm of nature is writhing. The artist's garden, which she has tended for 20 years, is transferred to the canvas, offering the viewer natural energy and comfort.

Choi Myung-Ae's work could also advocate social change. Cheong Jong-hyo says Choi Myung-Ae wants her works to "warn people through nature" and remind them that ignorance and greed no longer provide people with the life and comfort that nature offers. Accordingly, Choi Myung-Ae's garden has the power to lead the viewer into an infinite space that is "sometimes symbolic, sometimes meditative, and sometimes reflective," going beyond a simple space of decoration or tranquility.

The artist, who graduated from the Art Department of Seoul National College, the Master of Esthetics at Seoul National College, and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the College of Hawaii, was successfully introduced to the Korean art scene through major domestic fairs such as Kiaf + and Art Busan after her solo exhibition at Joeun Gallery in 2022. The exhibition features 25 new works ranging from large oil paintings such as "Forest of Light," which are over two meters long, to small drawings reflecting the relationship between man and nature, showing the wonderful vitality and comfort of nature's garden.
