갤러리조은은 이재현(b.1979)의 개인전《Alone Again : 다시 혼자》를 8월 17일부터 9월 9일까지 개최한다. 삶이 곧 작업의 근간인 이재현은 유년 시절 기억부터 어른이 된 오늘날까지 작가의 삶에 들어온 의미 있는 사람들과 사물들을 특유의 조형 언어로 풀어낸다.

비뚤어진 눈, 삐죽 튀어나온 코, 조그만 입의 사람과 사물들이 익살스러우면서도 어딘지 외롭다. 아담한 달동네에서 유년시절을 보냈던 작가는 해외 출장으로 자리를 비운 아버지, 생업으로 바쁜 어머니와 누나 사이에서 고독한 유년 시절을 보낸다. 홀로 남겨진 집안에서 많은 시간을 보내야 했던 어린 작가의 ‘정서적 허기’를 달래준 건 인형들과 장난감들이다. ‘베티’, ‘한나’, ‘토마스’ 등의 이름으로 의인화된 사물들은 어린 작가 곁을 지켜준 ‘친구’이자 마음을 달래준 ‘치유’의 존재들이다.

화려한 컬러의 익살스럽고 키치한 이 형상들의 질감이 어딘지 거칠고 투박하다. 물감을 두텁게 바르는 임파스토(Impasto) 기법으로 제작된 그의 회화 속 투박한 질감, 거친 선, 자유로운 색깔은 어린 시절 달동네부터 켜켜이 쌓아온 작가의 ‘삶의 결’의 무의식적 표현이다. 고독하고 쓸쓸한 존재인 작가의 시점으로 탄생된 미의식이 모든 작업과정과 결과에 표출된다. 홍경한 미술평론가는 “이재현에게 예술이란 기억의 호출이면서 현존재(Dasein)에 관한 담담한 일기”라 평한다.

평면회화지만 부조에 가까운 작가만의 입체적 마티에르는 오일을 뺀 유화에 건축용 재료를 혼합해 완성된다. 이는 건축과 조각을 전공했던 경험이 바탕이 되었는데, 순수 회화로 전향 후, 2022년 개인전을 기점으로, 2023년 파리 개인전 그리고 화이트스톤 갤러리 서울 개관전까지 신진 작가로서 성공적 행보를 이어나가며 국내외 미술계의 뜨거운 관심을 받고 있다.

본 전시를 통해, 작가가 살았던 상계동 달동네 풍경부터, 결핍을 충족하듯 장난감으로 장식장을 가득 채운 Obsession 시리즈, 놓을 수 없는 가족의 관계 Destiny 시리즈, 그리고 ‘공감’과 ‘치유’를 선사하는 응급키트 시리즈까지 총 21점의 신작을 선보이며 관객에게 진솔하고 담담한 이재현만의 ‘내적 풍경’을 선사할 예정이다.


Gallery Joeun is pleased to present Lee Jae-Hyun's solo exhibition "Alone Again" from August 17 to September 9. Lee Jae-Hyun, whose life forms the basis for his work, unravels meaningful people and objects that have entered the artist's life, from childhood memories to the present as an adult, in his unique artistic language.

The crooked eyes, the pouty nose, the small mouth - people and objects are humorous but lonely. The artist, who spent his childhood in a small shanty town, experienced a lonely childhood between his father, who was on a business trip, his mother and sister, who were busy earning a living. Dolls and toys satisfied the "emotional hunger" of the young artist, who had to spend much time alone in the house. The objects, personified under the names of "Betty"," "Hannah" and "Thomas", are "friends" that stand by the young artist and "healing" that soothes his mind.

The texture of these colorful, humorous and kitschy characters is rough and coarse. The rough texture, the coarse lines and the free colors in his paintings, created by the impasto technique of thick paint application, are an unconscious expression of the "texture of life" that the artist has layered since childhood. The esthetic consciousness born from the perspective of the artist, a lonely and solitary being, is expressed in all working processes and results. Art critic Hong Kyung-Han commented, "For Lee Jae-Hyun, art is a call to memory and a silent diary of existence."

The artist's three-dimensional matière, which is a flat but relief painting, is completed by mixing architectural materials with oil-free oil. He draws on his experience in architecture and sculpture. After turning to painting, he continued his successful career as an emerging artist, from his solo exhibition in 2022 to his solo exhibition in Paris and the inaugural exhibition of Whitestone Gallery Seoul in 2023.

In this exhibition, a total of 21 recent works are presented, ranging from the landscape of the shantytown "Sanggye-dong" where the artist lived, the series "Obsession" filled with toys as if encountering scarcity, the series "Destiny" about family relationships, and the series "Emergency Kit" offering "compassion" and "healing" to the viewer.
